During my studies and my research, I tried to find a “no synthetic chemical” skincare in our many departmental stores. I was shocked to find out that none of the skincare on the shelf was considered satisfactorily on every ingredient list I looked through. I guess only Castile Soap is the only one that passes my strict judgement.
But have you asked why do so many skincare products contain synthetic chemicals? Well, you may think that, oh, that’s how personal care products should be formulated. I won’t doubt that in the past since I was unaware of what is necessary for making skincare products. But now, after studying skincare formulation, I realized that a lot of synthetic chemicals could be avoided.
So why did so many skincare contains synthetic chemicals?
Well, synthetic ingredients are cheap to use, of course. Comparing to natural ingredients, which may cost $500/kg, the synthetic alternative may only cost $50/kg. It’s not surprising as natural ingredients are more difficult to produce. They need to be harvested, pressed, extracted, distilled, macerated etc. Thus, natural ingredients take lots of time and effort. But on the other hand, synthetic chemicals are produced in a lab or factory and are a lot more cost-effective.
Of course, most skincare manufacturers want to keep their costs as low as possible to gain as much profit as possible. This is done by using cheap synthetic chemicals and fillers in their formulation. One example is the use of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). SLS is a powerful foaming agent and is used in many personal care products. Though it is being used in a low percentage, it is surprising that scientists are using this ingredient to irritate the skin to cause dermatitis (eczema) in their clinical experiments. This ingredient is drying and irritating the skin, yet it is being used in the industry because it is cheap and the natural-derived ingredients are not cost-effective. That may be why, in my opinion, there are so many people suffering from eczema!
Another reason why natural ingredient is more superior is that synthetic ingredients lack therapeutic qualities that natural ones offer. For example, mineral oil found in many personal care products is a synthetic ingredient that offers no therapeutic benefits to the skin. It is made from highly refined, purified, and processed petroleum!
On the other hand, Sacha Inchi oil (extracted at low temperatures through the cold-press process) is one of the richest vegetable sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), namely Alpha-Linolenic Acid (Omega 3), Linolenic Acid (Omega 6), and Oleic Acid (Omega 9). It regulates oil production, maintains elasticity, soothes, prevents inflammation, promotes softness, smoothness, and suppleness, hydrates the skin without clogging the pores, helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines, and is gentle enough to use on all skin types.
